Nagashi Dragon & Nagashi Waves

Nagashi is Japanese for “flowing” and in these pictures sumi ink flows to create hidden images. This historical technique is one that I’ve been playing with in the studio. What I find most interesting about suminagashi is that the outcome seems spontaneous. Unlike my sumi painting where I appear to have more control of the outcome, suminagashi seems more challenging as the technique demands patience and a meditative stillness both in hand and breath.

One of my nagashi creations. Let me know what you see. I’d love to hear from you!
