Essentials

My journey began in 2006 with Sumi-e, the Japanese art of black ink painting, inspired by a series of blank walls and a love of black ink art. Even today, seeing empty walls makes me yearn for a brush!

I am captivated by the history of the art form and strive to understand the old master’s works and their lessons. The process of preparing the ink is a meditative practice that allows me to reflect on the emotional qualities of the subject. So when I put brush to paper, my goal is for the spirit or essence of the image to flow through. What emerges in my art is a peaceful simplicity that is complex and dynamic.
